The School of Overseas Education (SOE) recently organized a series of engaging cultural experience activities aimed at fostering exchange and integration between Chinese and foreign cultures. Over 50 international students from countries including Russia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Laos, and Bangladesh participated, gaining hands-on experience with traditional Chinese culture.
Immersive Tea Culture Experience
On November 27, SOE, in collaboration with the School of Tourism and Recreation's Association of Cultural Communication and Quality Development, hosted a Chinese tea culture experience for international students. Participants delved into the historical origins, classification, and production processes of Chinese tea, while also enjoying a traditional tea ceremony performed by students dressed in traditional costumes. Through interactive group practices, the international students personally brewed tea, exploring each step from selecting leaves to perfecting brewing techniques. The event culminated in heartfelt exchanges where participants shared their newfound knowledge and strengthened friendships.
Intangible Cultural Heritage: Jintan Paper-Carving Activity
On December 5, SOE invited international and Chinese students to participate in an intangible cultural heritage workshop at the School of Arts and Creativity. Focused on the national-level intangible cultural heritage of Jintan paper-carving, the event featured guidance from master Yang Zhaoqun and instructor Yao Yaqi. Students created intricate paper-carving works that blended traditional motifs with innovative elements. Notably, Iskhak, a student from Kyrgyzstan, infused his creation with elements of Kyrgyz culture, while Yang Yiping from Myanmar crafted a piece symbolizing the Year of the Snake.
Bridging Cultures through Art
These activities enriched the campus life of international students, showcasing the unique allure of China’s rich cultural traditions. They demonstrated how art transcends language barriers, serving as a bridge to connect diverse cultures. Through this platform, the international students expressed their intention to share these beautiful experiences with people in their home countries, promoting greater appreciation for Chinese tea culture and the art of Jintan paper-carving and enhancing international cultural understanding.
